Nashville
The Sounds took Monday night off as part of the Triple AAA All-Star break. Pitchers Lindsay Gulin and Luis Pena and catcher Vinny Rottino will represent Nashville in the contest pitting the Pacific Coast and International leagues Wednesday night in Louisville.
The Sounds resume play Friday with a three-game series at Iowa before embarking on an eight-game home stand against Tacoma and Portland.
Huntsville
Most of the Stars had the night off and won’t return to action until Wednesday when they open a big five-game home series against Tennessee, which holds the top spot in the Southern League’s North Division, two games ahead of Huntsville.
Meanwhile, several Stars were in Zebulon, N.C., for the league’s All-Star game Monday night and played significant roles in helping the North win 6-1.
Shortstop Alcides Escobar finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs, pinch hitter-center fielder Michael Brantley went 2 for 2 with a run, left fielder Cole Gillespie was 2 for 4 and catcher Angel Salome finished 0 for 1 with a walk.
On the mound, David Welch pitched a perfect third and Patrick Ryan allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh for the Stars.
Brevard County
The Manatees (8-16) had broken a five-game losing skid Sunday but suffered a grueling 1-0 setback in 10 innings at Sarasota on Monday.
Lefty Chris Cody allowed only three singles through seven scoreless innings in a duel with Sarasota righty Scott Carroll, who gave up five hits but struck out eight in the same time. Misael DeJesus relieved Carroll and struck out the side in the eighth and held the Manatees hitless for three innings with seven Ks.
Mike McClendon (2-5) allowed a single, double and intentional walk, and Casey Baron coaxed a ground ball but the winning run scored.
West Virginia
The Power held a 6-2 advantage after batting in the fifth, but the visitors’ pitching staff stumbled after that as they suffered a 9-8 defeat in 11 innings.
The Power had an eight-game winning string snapped Sunday but completed an eight-game road swing at 6-2. They begin an eight-game home stand Wednesday against Columbus, which leads the Southern Division. The teams haven’t met yet this year, and the Catfish finished seventh out of eight teams in the first half.
Left fielder Anderson De La Rosa hit his second homer, a two-run shot to left, in the second and finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs for West Virginia. Second baseman Eric Farris was 3 for 6, while third baseman Zelous Wheeler, first baseman Steffan Wilson and shortstop Matt Cline added two hits apiece.
Evan Frederickson lasted three innings after allowing two runs, one earned. He struck out four but his trouble was control as he issued six walks. Michael Bowman gave up four runs in two innings, Michael Ramlow allowed two runs in three frames and Corey Frerichs (4-7) suffered the loss after walking five and giving up three hits and a run in 2.1 innings.
Helena
The Brewers received their best pitching effort of the season in posting their second shutout, a 5-0 combined three-hit triumph against Casper.
Lefty starter Lucas Luetge (3-0) pitched the first five innings and still hasn’t allowed an earned run in 10 innings. Santo Manzanillo allowed one hit in two innings, Rico Salmon tossed a hitless frame and Wily Peralta gave up a hit in finishing off the ninth.
Helena improved to 14-13 as designated hitter Corey Kemp went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, while first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard scored twice and third baseman John Delaney notched a triple.
Arizona
The last-place Brewers (3-14) rallied from a 6-3 deficit to knot things at 6-all in the eighth only to fall, 7-6, to the Padres in the ninth.
Left fielder Miguel Vasquez finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while center fielder Jose Rangel went 1 for three with three RBIs with a grounder in the third and two-run single in the seventh. Catcher Shawn Zarraga hit his first homer.
First-round supplemental draft pick Jacob Odorizzi made his second appearance another good one, tossing three innings of one-hit ball with one walk and five strikeouts to keep his ERA at 0.00.
However, Kristian Bueno and Joel Morales each gave up three runs in two innings before Brandon Rapoza (0-1) got stuck with the loss by allowing the deciding run on two hits in his one inning.
